JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown Search & Rescue Dog Chloe was injured Friday night after a hit and run in Jamestown.

Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther is Chloe’s handler and says he takes blame for her getting out.

“I opened the door and she took off,” he said. “She has done it before. I called dispatch and they’re usually pretty good in locating her, but she returned shortly afterwards and was bleeding profusely.”

Ruether says he took Chloe to Dr. Dawn’s, who found that she had suffered no broken bones. He stated that his daughter located where Chloe had been hit, which was only about 30 feet away from the house.

“There’s no broken bones, which is a positive. She’s just going to be laid up for a little while. She’s going to be okay.”

Those with information are encouraged to say something on the case. But, Reuther says he’s not looking for donations or anything.

“I take full blame for it,” he stated. “I’m not looking for donations or anything. I just think the biggest thing is we would have thought someone would have let us know. I’m sure they would want the same for their animals or even children.”

While there is no law against hit & runs on dogs, Ruether just encourages people that if they hit a dog, cat, or other animal to tell someone.

“These are kids, they’re family,” Reuther said.
