OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A second top 5 win for the Oakes Tornadoes opened up their home football schedule with a statement 37-14 win over fifth ranked Thompson.
The last two seasons has ended at the hands of the Thompson Tommies for Oakes’ football squad. They got some revenge Friday night.
Oakes’ defense force back-to-back three and outs to begin the ball game, and Oakes offense capitalized with a TD on their first drive with a 3 yard TD run from fullback Marc Seyer. A two point conversion made it an 8-0 lead.
Thompson answered back on its third drive with a 29 yard TD pass from quarterback Clay Odenbach to Jacob Dick. A two point conversion tied the game at 8. This touchdown drive started a stretch of four consecutive touchdown drives between Oakes and Thompson.
Garret Meehl turned in an impressive performance in the win. Late in the first quarter, he tossed a dime to his tight end Ashton Biesterfeld for a 26 yard TD pass. A second two point conversion made it 16-8 with under three to play in the opening quarter. Meehl would find Biesterfeld for a second TD later in the half.
Again, Thompson would respond with an Odenbach 3 yard TD pass to Chase Danner early in the second quarter and failed a two point conversion and trailed 16-14. This was the last time Thompson put points on the board. Oakes’ defense held Thompson to four punts and a turnover on downs its last five drives.
Oakes offense, on the other hand, would score the 21 unanswered to cap off a dominant victory.
Meehl found Biesterfeld for a 56 yard TD pass, found Brackin Awender for a 20+ yard TD pass and Logan Sell put the exclamation point on the game with a 53 yard touchdown run.
A big time win for Oakes propels them to a 3-0 (2-0) record while Thompson drops to 2-1 (1-1).
Next time out for the Tornadoes is next Friday at Sargent County. The game can be heard on KDDR The Tornado with a 6:45 pregame start.
