Richard James Thum was born October 7, 1937 in Page, ND to Alfred and Emma (Krack) Thum.  He attended school at Minnie Lake, Pillsbury, and Page.  For most of Richard’s life along with the assistance of his brother Buddy, they both worked land near Page ND. In 1974 Richard had taken ownership of the family homestead where he grew crops and attended to cattle until 1995. Richard was very close to his brothers and looked forward to their weekly outings.  In the years between 2000 through 2016 Richard assisted Craig Burchill in raising Angus bulls. Richard was known to roam the local back roads stopping to either provide assistance or “shoot the breeze” with local neighbor farmers. During this time Richard had grown close to the Brudevold family and became a mentor to Jeremy.  In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with friends and family. Richard was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.

Richard is survived by his brother, Alfred “Bud” Thum of Valley City and sister, Violet Thum of Fargo.  His nieces and nephews, LeRoy Johnson, Amy Bergen, Allen Rausch, Anna Marie Stenson, Andrew Rausch, Myra Wilder, Michael DeSha, Joel DeSha, and Kevin DeSha, and a number of great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Vera DeSha, Alice Rausch and Barbara Johnson; brother, Henry “Hank”; nephews, Keith DeSha and Wayne Johnson and brother in-law DuWayne “Bee” Johnson.
