JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – The 20th-ranked University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team defeated No. 18 Vanguard (Calif.) and sixth-ranked Southern Oregon University on Saturday, finishing their run in the Raider Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Jimmies will be in Bellevue, Neb., next weekend as part of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic.
Jamestown 3, Vanguard 1
UJ used a balanced offensive attack to take down Vanguard University in Saturday’s first match. Ellie Michaletz (JR/Aitkin, Minn.) sent down 13 kills for a team-best .278 hitting percentage, and Anna Holen(SO/LaMoure, N.D.) added seven kills to go along with 23 digs. Britta Knudson (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) and Corina Ruud (JR/Breezy Point, Minn.) each finished with six kills and hit .222 for the match.
Hannah Schiele (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) and Sydney Ellingson(JR/Langdon, N.D.) recorded 21 digs each from the back row, and at the front of the net, the Jimmies were led by Knudson’s 10 total blocks. Jackie Meiklejohn (SO/Dickey, N.D.) passed out 18 assists and Miranda Lowman (SR/Mandan, N.D.) recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.
Jamestown outhit Vanguard .149-.098 and made just 17 attack errors compared to Vanguard’s 33.
Jamestown 3, Southern Oregon 1
The Jimmies knocked the host Raiders from the ranks of the unbeaten in Saturday’s final match, while recording their second victory of the day against a Top-20 team.
Michaletz again led UJ’s offense, racking up 13 kills with a .312 hitting percentage. Isabel Wedell (SR/Ellendale, N.D.) hit .391 with 12 kills and Knudson hit .333 with 10 kills. Ruud also finished above .300 for the match, hitting .304 with eight kills.
Lowman had 25 assists and Meiklejohn just missed out on a double-double with 24 assists and eight digs. Ellingson led the way with 14 digs while Holen added 12.
Knudson (five total blocks), Ruud (four), and Taylor Sabinash(SO/Kensal, N.D.) (four) paced the UJ net defense.
NOTES: The Jimmies lost just three sets by a total of nine points in their final three matches this weekend. UJ responded in a strong way, winning the next set by an average of 10 points…Jamestown outhit their opponents in their four wins. Last season Jamestown was 21-1 in matches when posting a higher attack percentage…With 796 wins in program history, UJ is just four away from 800.
