CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) In the first game of the year for both teams, the Thunder of Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm scored the first three touchdowns of the game and never looked back as they go on to defeat the Carrington Cardinals 28-6 on Friday night.

Not quite three minutes into the game, Senior QB Cale Mathern connected with Jorgen Paulson for a 30-yard touchdown reception to put EEK up early 6-0. Three minutes later, Senior Kodie Slivoskey grabbed a Cardinal fumble and ran into the end zone for a TD, the two-point conversion was good making the score 14-0. Mathern would score the third touchdown of the game for EEK with about four minutes left in the first quarter on a QB keeper from the 1-yard line. Carrington scored their first and only touchdown of the contest with about nine minutes left to play in the second quarter when Senior QB Seth Nelson ran an option play on fourth down into the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown, making it 20-6. Slivoskey would score his second TD of the game late in the second quarter on a five yard run. The Cardinals committed three turnovers in the first quarter and were held to just a little over 100 yards of total offense in the first half.
