VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A contract for the Valley Recycling Center has been approved by the city of Valley City.
The owner of Valley Recycling Adam Faul asked for the city’s support to keep the center open. He said with this approval the center will expand recycling opportunities in the city and county.
But City Commissioner Mike Bishop questioned the idea of subsidizing a company using tax payer dollars.
However, Valley City resident Dave Zubrod encouraged the commission to support a contract to keep the recycling center open.
On a 3 to 2 vote the commission approved of a contract after a nearly one hour discussion. Commissioners Bishop and Powell voted against the motion on Tuesday, July 16th.
Under the agreement there will be a $1 recycling fee added to utility bills for each residential property and apartment in Valley City. Commercial increases will depend on the size and number of recycling dumpsters they have at their businesses in Valley City. The fees will go into effect on September 1st of 2019. Valley Recycling will collect an estimated $65,970 from the fee increase.
On Tuesday, July 16th the Barnes County Commission approved of a request from Adam Faul to use $20-Thousand dollars to help with the operation of the recycling center, that combined with the city contract will allow Valley Recycling to remain open for the year ahead according to Faul.
