BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Grotberg Electric/Enterprise Sales/Tavern 94 of Valley City topped 35 other teams from across the state to win the Men’s Rec 1 Division of the 44th Annual Sam McQuade Charity Softball Tournament in Bismarck this past weekend.
Grotberg went 6-0 in the tournament beginning with a 24-9 win over Rio Lawn from Mandan on Saturday. The 24 runs included a three-run home run by Josh Lagein and grand slam home runs by Beau Brunsvold and Brian Klevgaard. Grotberg followed that with a 16-6 win over Eagles Crest from Grand Forks and a 19-9 win over Thunder Road from West Fargo.
On Sunday, Grotberg battled from behind and scored four runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to defeat Blarney Stone out of Fargo 9-8 when Rudy Ask scored on a base hit by Nate Rodriguez.
In the semifinal game, Grotberg found themselves behind by two runs in the 7th inning to 2019 Michelob Light tournament champion, Big Ervs out of Fargo. Klevgaard won the game for Grotberg in the bottom of the 7th with a walk off RBI to defeat Big Ervs 16-15.
In the championship game, Grotberg faced West Fargo’s Urgent Med. After a scoreless first inning, Grotberg took a 6-1 lead after the second inning and held on to win 12-4 to win the championship.
The Sam McQuade Charity Softball Tournament is the largest slowpitch softball tournament in the world. This year, it included 464 men’s and women’s teams from 12 different states and raised over $125,000 for 40 different charities this year.
