VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Are you looking for new ideas in grilling? Sign up for the Grilling 101 presentation by NDSU meat specialist Spencer Wirt on Monday, July 8 at the Dacotah Pavilion in Chautauqua Park in Valley City. Wirt will share and demonstrate his knowledge of grilling.

He will be speaking on the following information:
1. Grill Use
· Get to know your propane grill
· Get to know your pellet grill (if applicable)
· Creating smoke/ indirect cooking with a propane grill
2. Rubs (possibly marinades depending on timing)
· Science of Salt
· “Carnivore” Rub; base of all meat rubs
· Creating your own rubs
· Seasoning/ Rubbing meat
3. Degree of Doneness
· Lethality / “Food Safety”
· Using a Thermometer
· Time/ Temperature
· Cooked Meat Resting
4. Grilling Fruit

The Valley City Parks & Recreation has teamed up with the NDSU Extension Service to bring Grilling 101 to Valley City. “I am so excited to have NDSU’s BBQ Boot camp grill master coming to Valley City,” says Susan Milender, NDSU Extension Educator in Barnes County.  She said, “This is a very special event, and I feel very fortunate that Spencer Wirt, the meat lab specialist is coming to teach sizzlin’ summer grilling techniques for charcoal and propane grilling.  He is going to show us the magic of using rubs to get the best flavors out of certain cuts of beef and pork.  He will tell us how to use a meat thermometer.  every participant will receive a free meat thermometer.  To wrap up his show, he will prepare grilled apples which is a recipe he uses at NDSU Bison tailgating.”

There is a limit of 30 people, you must pre-register at the Valley City Parks & Recreation with a minimal fee of $10 per person. Spencer’s presentation will begin at 5:30 pm in the Dacotah Pavilion located in Chautauqua Park in Valley City.
