JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown Dollars for Scholars was just short of their 7,500 goal, but were very proud of the amount collected and donated over the past six months.

On Saturday, Jamestown High School Football players helped load up a truck with 296 bags packed with 25 pairs of shoes each.

“It’s really fantastic,” Elaine Hegland stated. “We had shoes donated from Wimbledon, Carrington, Jamestown, and Tennessee. Just all over the place. Community support was great.”

DeAnn Ament, vice president and marketing chair for the Jamestown Dollars for Scholars Board, reported this year that round 600 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills.

Shoes donated will be shipped to third world countries where micro-businesses will sell them. Money collected will then be used to provide scholarships to JHS Seniors. Around $0.40 will be donated for each pound of shoes donated.

Events over the course of the past few months have helped bolster donations. Spots in the region accepted lightly used and new shoes that will no go help third world countries.
