VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A lot of memories went up in flames as the Valley City Fire Department conducted a controlled burn of the former Chuck Schelkoph home along the Sheyenne River in Valley City on May 19th.

David Schelkoph said his father built the home in the 1950’s after purchasing a house kit from a national company. He said his father and mother raised six children in the home.

Friends and neighbors fondly reminisced about the Schelkoph family swing that hung from an Elm tree that allowed you to jump into the river during the summer months.

It was the last home on a narrow stretch of land along the Sheyenne River in northeast Valley City after other homes were removed several years ago during a FEMA buyout. The city of Valley City purchased the Schelkoph home through the city flood buyout program.
