VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The record setting season continues for the Valley City State Viking softball team. Saturday, the top seed and seventh ranked Vikings swept Bellevue in best 2 out of 3 championship series to take the North Star Athletic Association Softball post season tournament. The Vikings to game one 3-2 and won the second game 7-0.

Game #1 – Valley City State 3, Bellevue 2

Emily Smith had three hits and drove in the first runof the game leading the Vikings to their 17th straight win. Smith had an rbi triple in the first, one batter after Joelle Aiello led off with a triple. After only having one hit in her first 12 at bats in the tournament, Smith added two singles to go with the triple.

Aiello, Tatum Lundin and Jayme Menard had the other hits for the Vikings. Menard’s was an rbi double that brought in Lundin to make it 3-0 after two innings.

Smith picked up her 31st win of the season going seven innings. She allowed three hits, two earned runs with five walks and 12 strikeouts. The Bruins got two solo home runs to score their runs.

Game #2 Valley City State 7, Bellevue 0

In game two, seven different players had at least one hit, seven different players scored and five drove in runs. Head Coach Mike Mook says its nice to have a lineup like this.

 

Freshman Emilee Wilson started in the circle for the Vikings. She went six shut out innings, allowed five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Amber Stewart pitched a scoreless seventh for the Vikings. Wilson, who was names Newcomer of the Year in the NSAA, earned her 18th win. Coach Mook was not surprised to see her do what she did as a Freshman.

 

 

Aiello, Voni Culp, Marissa Hawkins, Autumn Perry and Jayme Menard each had two hits. Lundin started the scoring in the fibe run fourth with her team leading fifth home run on the season. Lundin holds the school career record with 24 home runs. She also too over the leadership in games played with 207, and counting.

The Vikings have won 18 games in a row and continue to add to the already school record with 51 wins versus thtee losses. Coach Mook says when they got together in the fall he felt that this team had the capability of doing what they have done thus far.

 

 

The Vikings will not know what regional they will be in until 3pm Tuesday afternoon.
