VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Avery Bennefeld cleared the bases with a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning leading the Valley City Hi-Liner to a 6-3 win over Fargo South in game one of the Eastern Dakota Conference baseball doubleheader at Charlie Brown Field Friday night.

The inning started out with Braxton Jorissen reaching on an error. He would take second when pitcher Geoffrey Youngs pick off attempt went down the right field line. Mitchell Taylor walked ending the night of Youngs. Jake Bryant the next two batters. One was Connor May who sacrificed the base runners to second and third. Easton Hesch was intentionally walked to load the bases. Corey Nelson drew a walk to score Jorissen to tie the game at 3. Bennefeld hit the first pitch he saw into the gap in right center field, clearing the bases to give the Hi-Liners the lead 6-3.

South took the lead 3-1 in the fourth when Youngs led off the inning with a triple, then scored on Max Olson’ssafety squeeze. Olson came around on Tanner Kirkeby’s single.

The Hi-Liners first run came on a Joe Cummings rbi single in the second inning that tied the game at 1. The Bruins got an unearned run in the top of the first.

Mitchell Taylor got the win for Valley City. He allowed two earned runs with a walk and four strike outs. He scattered eight hits over seven innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.

In game two, the Bruins scored 10 runs in the first inning on the way to a 15-5 win. The Hi-Liners are now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the EDC. They will travel to Fargo North next Friday for a conference double-header.
