VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation is happy to announce the recipients of our 2019 Community Grant Round. Thanks to generous donors and a successful fundraising event last fall we were able to award $34,750 to thirteen nonprofits in Barnes, Griggs and Ransom Counties.

This portion highlights the grants that were awarded in rural Barnes and Griggs County.

Executive Director Andrea Nelson said Barnes County North Foundation received $2,000 to launch their Critical Needs Program. The Critical Needs Program will supply personal hygiene products, winter gear, backpacks or other basic school needs, activity fees, counseling services, or transportation to receive assistance for such services to the students of BCN.

Mike Schwehr, BCN Foundation Board Member says “Our staff at BCN see the need for this type of program and have shared stories of purchasing winter boots for a student using their own money or paying for food for a student on a field trip.” Schwehr continues, “Another great challenge facing BCN and today’s youth is the increasing mental health needs of our students. It is our hope to expand this program and create an opportunity to provide needed service to our rural students.”

Hannaford Park District was awarded $5,000 to complete the fundraising of their project to purchase playground equipment for the City Park. There is currently no playground equipment for the community other than a swing set. “This project is designed to provide our area youth with hours of enjoyment as well as encouraging others passing through town to stop and appreciate what our community has to offer.” Said Jill Haugen, Economic Development Director of Hannaford.

Hannaford Arts Council was awarded $500 towards purchasing a new PA system for the community center where they host quality art exhibits and performances. “The Arts Council intents to host dinner theater’s, plays and summer theater in the coming months to bring people into the community to help our current businesses prosper.” Said Jill Haugen, President of Hannaford Arts Council.

The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that brings together the financial resources of individuals, families, and businesses to support a wide variety of nonprofit organizations in Barnes, Ransom, and Griggs Counties.
