JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fort Seward has been a piece of Jamestown’s history long before the city even existed.
An active military fort from 1872 to 1877, the site is now home to some old artifacts and virtual tours of fort and more. Fort Seward Board President Dale Marks says they’re prepared for their opening day May 25th.
Marks says in the past year, the board and volunteers have all freshened up the exhibits and site with some added features.
Marks says they also have a mural of Jamestown displayed on the north wall. He says that was taken around 1875 and they also have a tin type of the same picture.
Interpretive Center Director Jennie Marks says they have a lot of events planned at the Fort with the first being a Memorial Day project.
The memorial bricks are set to give honor and memorialize those who have served or are serving in the military.
Jennie says they’ve also got their pumpkin patch and soldier’s garden ready to grow and are seeking volunteers to help maintain them over the summer. Their popular Big Guns of the Old West event will also return in September.
In the interpretive center, they’ve got new touchscreen’s that help tell the history of Fort Seward.
Jennie also pointed out that a Kid’s Corner has also been setup so there’s something for them to do too.
The Fort will be free and open to the public every day from 10 AM to 6 PM through the summer. Individuals are also encouraged to walk on the walkway and enjoy the site.
You can like Fort Seward on Facebook for constant updates on events and more. You can also call them at 701-251-1875. Jennie says they’re working on establishing a new website as well. The Fort is located at 605 10th Ave. NW.
