JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A large winter storm that was expected to hit parts of Southern North Dakota and much of South Dakota has moved further north than previously forecast.
The National Weather Service reports that on top of Spring flooding that has covered portions of the region, an added blizzard warning and winter storm warning have joined the mix.
The storm is expected to drop heavy snow with near blizzard conditions. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are possible for Stutsman County with 7 to 14 inches for Logan, LaMoure, McIntosh, and Dickey counties. Winds will gust upwards of 45 mph, causing significant blowing snow.
Janine Vining is with the Bismarck National Weather Service.
“A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” the service reports. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”
Dickey County Emergency Manager Charlie Russell is encouraging everyone in the storms path to prepare, especially after flooding in the area.
“This may be one of the most dangerous storms you have ever been in because of how slaughtered our road system is,” Russell explained. “The winds will remove flags and signs, winter visibility issues we are used to will be compounded because of all of the mud bogs, standing high water and roads with holes in them.”
