JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Dru Fitz (JR/Gresham, OR) and Tanner Roundy (SR/Henderson, NV) turned in quality starts for the University of Jamestown baseball team Monday as the Jimmies swept a doubleheader against Hastings College by identical 3-1 scores.
Jamestown improves to 15-9 overall and 5-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Hastings falls to 5-14 and 2-6 in the GPAC.
The Jimmies will be in Mitchell, S.D., for doubleheaders against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University on Saturday and Sunday.
Game 1: Jimmies 3, Broncos 1
Dru Fitz gave up one run over five innings and UJ used a three-run fifth to take game one by a score of 3-1.
Fitz (2-2) struck out four in his fourth start of the season. Joe Harris (SO/Recluse, WY) pitched two scoreless innings for his first save.
Tanner Roundy and Kaleb Binstock (SR/Grand Forks, ND) each had RBI singles and Jaden Yackley (SR/Lynnwood, Wash.) came home on a Bronco throwing error as the Jimmies led 3-0 after the fifth.
Hastings had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but only managed to push one run across.
Game 2: Jimmies 3, Broncos 1
In the nightcap, Roundy went the distance on the mound and allowed just one unearned run as Jamestown won 3-1.
Roundy (2-0) gave up two hits and struck out eight while going the distance.
Matt Meraz (JR/Aurora, CO) took advantage of a Hastings error to score the Jimmies’ first run in the second.
Yackley doubled home Grant Okawa (JR/Mississauga, ON) in the fifth to make it 2-0 in favor of UJ.
After Hastings scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead in half, Yackley singled in Chase Hacker (JR/Millcreek, WA) in the seventh to help Jamestown retake a two-run lead.
Jamestown finished with just four hits in the game but stole two bases and used a Jared Bentley (JR/Washougal, WA) sacrifice bunt to get a runner into scoring position.
