SIOUX CITY, Iowa (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown men’s basketball team was picked to finish 9th in the GPAC preseason poll, they exceeded those expectations all year and Tuesday night in Sioux City was no different. Facing the No. 2 team in the country for the second time in 10 days, the Jimmies came away with their second win. This time snapping Morningside’s 31-game home winning streak in the process, 86-84.
The first half was a heavy-weight fight with two of the most efficient offensives in the country trading blows. Morningside took a 49-46 lead into the break. Kevin Oberweiser lead the charge for Jamestown with 15 in the half.
“A little different than last time,” Oberweiser said after the game of his 0-10 from beyond the arch outing in December in Sioux City. “I saw a couple go in early and I was feeling good.”
He finished with a team-high 20.
Obweiser hit a deep triple midway through the half to push Jamestown’s lead to its highest mark at six. Morningside wasn’t going quietly.
Jamestown looked like they might have a chance to seal it with Jon Purintun at the line in the final seconds, but he missed and Brody Egger went the length of the floor to draw a foul, down just two.
However, Egger, who was 6-6 from the line, missed both. Following a timeout, a Morningside foul sent Jack Talley to the line with 2.2 left.
Talley missed the front end of the 1-and-1, but the clock ran out on the miss and the Jimmies stormed the court.
Morningside shot 35 free throws to nine for Jamestown.
The Jimmies improve to 28-5 and will find out at 5pm Wednesday their draw for the national tournament.
