JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For the first time since 2014, Kidder County will be headed to the State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament following an 56-48 win over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Thursday night in the Region 3 Championship.
3rd Place – Carrington 61, Oakes 58 F/OT
Three games, three overtimes. That was the Region 3 tournament for Oakes. The Tornadoes lost a nine point lead in the third quarter thanks to a 14-2 run by Carrington that went into part of the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals played their second straight overtime game, losing to Kidder County 81-72 on Tuesday night.
Kiera Eli hit back-to-back three pointers to start the overtime to give the Cardinals a 61-55 lead, a lead they did not give up. Twice late in the overtime, the Cardinals had the one-and -one situation at the free throw line and both times, Bella Hone grabbed the rebound on the first miss to keep possession. Hone finished with a team high 13 rebounds. McKenzie Johnson led Carrington with 20 points and five rebounds. Eli ended with 15 points. Hannah Hagel had double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Nicole Schmitz led the Tornadoes with 20 points and eight rebounds. Sadie Hansen had her third straight double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Jaida Seyer had her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Carrington ends the season 19-4 while Oakes falls to 18-7.
Championship: Kidder County 56, LaMoure/Litchville-Marion
Kidder County built a 25-7 lead in the first half, then needed to hold off a fierce rally by LaMoure/Litchville-Marion for their first Region title since beating South Border 45-44 in overtime in 2014.
The Wolves led 29-12 at the half, but saw the Loboes cut it to 38-31 by the end of the third quarter. But Kidder County hit free throws down the stretch and held on for the win.
Brittany Rath led the Wolves with 17 points and four assists. Jaslyn Magstadt had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Madelyn Schmidt ended with 13 points.
Ellie Holen ended with 17 points and five assists for the Loboes. Kaylynn Siedschlag had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Top ranked Kidder County improves to 23-0 and will head to the State Class B Girl’s Basketball tournament next week in Grand Forks.
LaMoure/Litchville-Marion ends the season 20-5.
After the game, Amanda Allen of Medina-Pingree-Buchanan was named Region 3 Senior of the Year and Kidder County’s Dan Welder won Region 3 Coach of the Year.
