CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Cardinals of Carrington led for most of the game and beat Ellendale by 18 points, 52-34, for an important District 5 victory. Carrington improves to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the district, Ellendale drops to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the district.
Carrington scored only four points in the second quarter but still had the lead 21-15 at halftime. Junior Seth Nelson helped Carrington take a 38-26 lead at the end of the third quarter by going 5-of-5 at the free throw line, Senior McCoy VandeHoven hit two field goals and Senior Payton Smith hit two field goals as well in the third. Nelson ended with 12 points, VandeHoven with 10 and Smith with six points. Senior Trey Rosenau had seven points of the bench, including a buzzer-beating 3-point bank shot at the end of the first quarter. Rosenau played in his first game back since an ACL tear during the football season earlier this fall. Senior Chase Wells added six points as well for Carrington. Leading the way for Ellendale was Freshman Scott Wagner with 16 points off the bench, Junior Hunter Thorpe added 10, Austin Molan had six.
