CLEVELAND, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A Montpellier man survived a potentially deadly crash with a train just east of Cleveland Thursday.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office reports that 44 year-old Shane Steele was traveling south on 64th Avenue SE in a semi-truck loaded with grain. Just after 1:30, Steele attempted to cross the railroad tracks when a BNSF coal train crashed through the trailer.

The trailer was destroyed and the truck received undercarriage damage. The train had lost air for its braking system and performed an emergency stop that broke the hitch to the train cars. The train rolled nearly four miles before finally coming to a stop.

Steele was transported to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The North Dakota Highway Patrol also responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
