VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- It was another closely contested match between The Hi-Liners and Firebirds. Playing in the quarterfinals of The EDC Tournament Tuesday afternoon, Devils Lake topped Valley City 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-23) to advance to Friday’s championship semifinals.
The Hi-Liners raced out to a 17-10 advantage in the opening set only to see Devils Lake come back. Tied at 18, The Firebirds finished on a 7-4 run to seal the win. It was Valley City who needed to comeback in set 2, down 14-6 they pulled in front 21-20. The game was knotted up 3 more times before Devils Lake come out on top.
Valley City tried once more to get a win from Devils Lake in set 3. They fell behind early and managed to tied the score at 23 but again fell short.
The Hi-Liners had 3 collect double figures in digs; Grace Scherr had 27, Josie Berntson 18 and Cali Halgrimson 13. Macy Olstad put down 11 kills with Halgrimson adding 9 and Berntson 4.
Lindsey Noeske had 7 blocks with Berntson, Taryn Dieterle and Jadyn Dieterle each getting 6. Natalie Lemnus posted a team high 16 assist.
Friday will see The Hi-Liners play in an elimination game against Fargo South. The Bruins were swept by top seeded Davies 17-25, 15-25, 15-25. VCHS needs to win to keep their state tournament hopes alive.
