JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – On Saturday, National Drug Take Back Day will encourage people to bring unused prescription drugs to one of over 160 drop-off locations in the state.

North Dakota offers two free year-round programs to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs and over the counter medications. All locations and the programs can be found at www.takeback.nd.gov.

“Let’s all do our part to keep these dangerous drugs from getting into the wrong hands. I encourage everyone to round up all the expired, leftover, or unwanted medications in the house, and get rid of them safely by dropping them off at a disposal site on Saturday,” said Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem.

RSVP Program Coordinator Deb Lee says they are working on sharing information related to the initiative.

“North Dakota is the only state in the country where every day is take back day,” Lee stated. “We did some research and found that our state has been proactively working toward ensuring safe disposal of prescription drugs since 2009, and drop off sites are available year-round at key locations in most of ND’s 53 counties.”

Since the program launched in 2009, more than twelve tons of drugs have been collected from the Take Back containers at local law enforcement agencies and safely destroyed.
