VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – The Viking women’s basketball team hosted its season opener Sunday afternoon, rolling to a big win against Providence College (Manitoba). Valley City State opened up a 48-15 halftime lead and 12 different Vikings scored in the 81-21 victory over the Pilots.

Valley City goes to 1-0 overall this season. Providence College drops to 1-4.

Mackenzie Huber got things rolling for the Vikings early as she put up the first six points of the game. The Vikings kept rolling from there, scoring 25 points in the first quarter – including 11 by Huber – to open up a 25-7 lead after 10 minutes of play.

It was all Valley City in the second quarter as well. The Vikings dropped 23 points to open up a 48-15 lead at the halftime break. Mackenzie Huber put up five more points in the quarter as she scored 16 first-half points to lead the Vikings.

Huber was one of four Vikings in double figures as she ended the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal.

Alli Vandal put up 12 points and had six rebounds, one block and three steals. Kaitlin Connor scored 12 points off the bench and added five rebounds and three assists. Freshman Alexis Bentz had a big game in her Viking debut, scoring 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Point guard Kate Williams dished out five more of VCSU’s 23 assists, and also added four points. Twelve different Vikings scored in the game, including nine who scored four or more points.

Valley City State shot 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) at the free throw line, 5-for-20 (25 percent) from the 3-point line and 33-for-69 (47.8 percent) from the field.

Providence shot 10-for-57 (17.5 percent) from the field, 0-for-14 on 3’s and 1-for-2 at the free throw line.

VCSU finished with 52 rebounds, 11 steals, 23 assists and 13 turnovers. Providence ended the game with 21 rebounds, eight steals, five assists and 17 turnovers.
