JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Seventh-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) College racked up 478 yards of total offense, including 40 first-half points, in a 49-7 win over the University of Jamestown Saturday afternoon at Rollie Green Field at Taylor Stadium.
The Red Raiders (2-0, 1-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference) went three-and-out on the opening possession, but found the end zone each of the next five times they had the ball, including a 61-yard interception returned for a touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, the Jimmies (1-2, 0-1 GPAC) had one first-half drive exceed 15 yards, and did not have a 20+ drive until 10:33 left in the third quarter. Tanner Mathern (SO/Edgeley, N.D.)’s one-yard touchdown run with 11:14 left capped off UJ’s longest drive of the game, 75 yards covering 11 plays in 5:40.
Northwestern quarterback Tyson Kooima passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another, one of four rushing scores for the Red Raiders. Running back Jacob Kalogonis carried 18 times for a game-high 95 yards and scored the second Northwestern touchdown in the first quarter. Shane Solberg caught five passes for 92 yards and a score.
For the Jimmies, Jimmy Hatch (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) had 38 yards on 13 carries, followed by Mathern with six rushes for 31 yards. Jordan Mann (JR/Bismarck, N.D.) was 8-of-21 passing for 65 yards and was intercepted three times, all by Bryce Van Beek. Marcus Giles(FR/Blaine, Minn.) had three catches for 18 yards, while Zeb Taber(JR/Fargo, N.D.) (one catch, 28 yards) and Barry Williams Jr. (FR/Las Vegas, Nev.) (one catch, 24 yards) accounted for UJ’s two longest gains of the day. Jamestown finished with 200 yards of total offense.
Bisherie Steward (JR/Rialto, Calif.) led the Jamestown defense with nine total tackles (four solo). Ben Steinolfson (SR/Steele, N.D.) and John Sullivan (FR/Sundance, Wyo.) finished with six total tackles each.
The Jimmies are home next Saturday against Concordia (Neb.). Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
