THOMPSON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Down two sets to zero, the Tommies came storming back to beat the Cardinals of Carrington on Thursday night 3-2 (22-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-7) in a non-region high school volleyball match. Thompson picks up their first victory of the year in as many games, Carrington drops to 1-1.
In the first set, the Cardinals were down 20-9, but Sr. McKenzie Johnson and Sr. Larissa Larson helped the comeback with some strong serves and the Cardinals outscored the Tommies 16-2 to get the first set victory. The second and third sets were back and forth as well, Jr. Macy Jordheim helped Thompson avoid the sweep in the third set with four kills and a stuff block. The defending Region 2 champs and state runner-ups from last year pulled out early in the fifth and final set to seal the victory. Jordheim and Sr. Kayden Mehring for Carrington led all hitters with 12 kills each. Sr. Isatu Shirek had eight kills, including the winner in the fifth set and a serving ace. Sr. Taylor Zak added eight kills as well. For Carrington, Jr. Bella Hone had 10 kills and four stuff blocks.
Next up for Carrington will be their first District 5 match-up of the year on Thursday, September 6th at Edgeley, to take on Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier. AM 1600 KDAK the Cardinal and newsdakota.com will have the prematch about 6:45pm, first serve around 7pm.
