Coach’s Comments
The scores don’t do this match justice. This was a fun match played at a high level. We had a great first two weeks of practice and it showed today. Sheyenne was too experienced for us, sporting four seniors in their top four spots, but we competed in every point in every match.
As a team, we played defense really. We got many balls back that we had no business touching using footwork and a never give up attitude. Derek Bear had a point where he ran down four balls to epitomize the game our players brought today.
Offensively, we need to attack the ball more at the net. We need to move in and put balls away. At the baseline, we need to attack the ball in our hitting zone. We hit many unforced errors because we took the ball at the wrong height or behind the front hip.
Blake and Jack did do their fair share of attacking leading to our lone victory of the day. In the second set, they got away from attacking – but were able to attack in the tiebreaker to win the match.
JV Thoughts:
A young Hi-Liner JV squad faced off against a tough, older Sheyenne team and hung on in every match, showing the Hi-Liners boys have a bright future. Max Magnuson and Jaden Johnson got the match started with a great win, 6-3 and then Ethan Bear and Casey Kruger pulled out a close match at the end of the evening as the last match on and with all the Varsity and Junior Varsity watching, 7-5. We are young and in-experience but that didn’t show tonight, everyone on the JV from top to bottom played hard and made Sheyenne earn every point!
