JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Those with an interest in law enforcement are being invited to join in the first ever Jamestown Citizen’s Academy.

Assistant Chief of Police Major Justin Blinsky told the city of Jamestown in July that there were several reasons they wanted to start and create this type of program in Jamestown.

Throughout the 10-week course, individuals will learn about different topics and will ultimately be encouraged to continue towards being in law enforcement. Some of those topics include:

-Firearms
-Traffic Stops
-Pursuits
-DUI
-Criminal Investigations
-SWAT
-Use of Force
-Taser
-Equipement Tours and more

While the academy doesn’t meet the standards and requirements of the North Dakota Peace Officer’ Standards and Training Board to become a peace officer, the course was established to provide citizens with a better generalized idea of what the job of law enforcement officer is.

Major Blinksy says that the idea of a citizen’s academy isn’t new and has been met with success in similar communities to Jamestown.

Major Blinksy says they’ll start out with a smaller number before increasing class sizes in future sessions.

The academy will run Mondays on October 8th from 6 PM to 9 PM. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older are encouraged to participate. Applications will be accepted until September 14th.

“We are very proud and excited to be able to host this Citizen’s Academy,” the department states. “Our main goal is to help the public and students who participate in this academy have a better understanding of what we do every day.”
