JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A name change hasn’t stopped the Jamestown Cancer Support Group and their mission to help those traveling for cancer care.
First known as Help for Hope and Healing (HHH), the group set out with the goal of matching the needs of families dealing with cancer with volunteers willing to meet those needs.
Volunteer Beth Dewald says because of the expanding need for what they do, they needed to branch off and become their own organization.
Founder Laurel Haroldson says they’ve been providing gas cards for transportation to chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
While the name has changed, the group maintains the logo and is using “Help for Hope and Healing” as their motto moving forward.
“Because fighting cancer can be an extremely draining experience physically, mentally and emotionally for patients and their families, other needs during this difficult time might include running errands, helping with household maintenance, cleaning, laundry or an occasional meal brought in for the family,” the organization states.
In less than a year, the group has distributed 74 gas cards to those in need. As far as finding those who qualify to receive the support, Dewald says it’s all through referrals.
Haroldson says while they are known as the Jamestown Cancer Support Group, their reach is to surrounding counties.
The group continues to raise funds for their cause with one of the largest being their Quarter Craze. Last year, the event raised more than $7,000 for gas cards and traveling cancer patients.
