JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A woman charged with crimes related to fake adoption proceedings of Native American children has turned herself in.

Betty Jo Krenz, 47, of Woodworth had a warrant issued for her arrest in April after having been found to have staged adoptions, taking money and never producing a baby for those wanting to provide foster care.

Families say Krenz used her background as a Spirit Lake social worker to produce fake adoption papers. Court documents show Krenz told one mom she was heavily involved in the Savanna Greywind case and expected to get custody of Greywind’s child.

According to the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, Krenz walked into the law enforcement center and met with Deputy Daniel White. Officials say she’d previously been in Hawaii.

In court documents provided by the State’s Attorney, investigations found that there had been several instances where Krenz promised a baby for adoption, but had failed to follow through.

In September 2017, Krenz met with law enforcement at her rural Stutsman County home and informed them that it had all been a misunderstanding. That she had only told the families that it was a possibility and that all she did was “put Native American mothers in contact with good families who could adopt if need be.”

Following a bond hearing Wednesday, Stutsman County State’s Attorney Fritz Fremgen reports that Krenz faces two counts of Theft of Property and one count of Unauthorized Use of Personal Identifying.

If found guilty, Krenz could face up to 10 years of prison and more than $20,000 in fines.
