BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Health has issued a blue-green algae advisory for three different waters.

The department reports that an advisory has been announced for Camels Hump Dam in Golden Valley County, Green Lake in McIntosh County and Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Burleigh County.

Also known as cyanobacteria, Blue-green algae can live in all types of water and is dangerous if consumed for both humans and animals. It grows quickly and blooms when water is warm, slow-moving and full of nutrients.

The advisory doesn’t prohibit use of the lakes, but health officials advise people to avoid areas where blooms are present. Lake users are also advised to rinse themselves and pets thoroughly and immediately in fresh water after possible contact and prevent pets and livestock from drinking affected water.
