BISMARCK, N.D. (NDDoT) – Preliminary data shows, from January 1 to June 30, 2018 there have been 39 motor vehicle fatalities in North Dakota, compared to 54 during the same period in 2017.
The last time motor vehicle fatalities were this low in the first half of the year was in 2010 when there were also 39 fatalities.
“While it is encouraging to see a nearly 28 percent decrease in vehicle fatalities in the first part of the year compared to last year, it is still too many.” says Karin Mongeon, Safety Division Director with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).
At the beginning of the year, Governor Burgum, the NDDOT, the North Dakota Highway Patrol and the North Dakota Department of Health launched Vision Zero – a strategy to eliminate motor vehicle crash fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roads.
Every driver and vehicle occupant in North Dakota can help meet the Vision Zero goal by taking personal responsibility when travelling on the road. This means always wearing a seat belt and using proper child restraints; driving sober; driving distraction free; wearing the proper motorcycle gear; and obeying the speed limits and all traffic laws.
“The goal of zero fatalities is not only attainable, but also vital. When it comes to your life, or the lives of your family and friends, what other number is acceptable? Every life matters.” Mongeon says.
