CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp was in Carrington Friday morning to talk about the latest regarding the next Farm Bill.

Area farmers, ranchers, agriculture leaders, and faith leaders in Carrington came out to hear the latest priorities that Senator Heitkamp was looking keep in the farm bill as debates continue between the senate and the house.

Senator Heitkamp says the hope is to get the bill passed by August or September.

Heitkamp says the bill will not have any measures to support farmers after China’s retaliatory tariffs went into effect today.

With the continued discussions on the farm bill, Heitkamp stresses that maintaining and keeping the family farm has become a priority.

According to Heitkamp’s office, Chinese companies were originally expected to buy about 1.14 million tons of American soybeans, but now it’s expected most orders will be cancelled.

Heitkamp also commented on the beautiful memorial service held in Carrington that she attended earlier this year and pointed out the importance of the NDSU Extension Research Center.

Senator Heitkamp will continue her farm bill chats in Wahpeton later today. She was previously in Mandan and Minot earlier this week.
