JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Stutsman County Weed Board has held their Field Day for more than 20 years according to Weed Officer Ron Manson.
This year’s field day is set for June 28th at 11 AM. Manson says the day will have participants collecting Leafy Spurge Beetles to then distribute and use on their own personal fields, crops and more.
Manson says when it comes to the beetle and distribution, there’s a rotation that needs to take place for them to be effective.
According to the NDSU Extension Service, leafy spurge is an exotic perennial weed that infests over 800,000 acres in North Dakota. Instead of focusing on destroying the weed with herbicides, the flea beetle has been introduced as a natural leafy spurge repellent.
Manson says there’s been years where upwards of 15 to 20 million beetles had been allocated and some years there’s been less than that. He encourages all those interested in combating leafy spurge to come to their free field day at the shop.
The Stutsman County Weed Board Shop is located at 1508 4th Street NW on the road to the Sale Barn. For more information on Stutsman County Field Day, contact Manson at 701-320-4512.
