JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A collaboration between the Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department, City Forester, Jamestown Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee, and Freedom Resource Center continues to take shape.

A sensory garden is an environment designed with the purpose of stimulating the senses. According to the Natural Learning Initiative, Sensory gardens provide intimate spaces where people can be immersed in scents, textures, and colors of plants and related elements.

The garden is located on the east side of Solien-Denault Park near Hillcrest Municipal Golf Course. Funding has come from multiple sources and grants, with the latest coming from the North Dakota Industrial Commission and the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District Recreation Committee.

“The garden is intended to be used by all area residents and thus designed for accessibility by all,” the Chamber states. “The design and layout provides a stimulating journey through the senses and brings a positive learning experience.”

Currently, the group is looking for donor contributions through “naming rights” for benches, planters, and trees which have been used to demonstrate local commitment to the project in matching grants.

The $25,000 project continues to be chipped away at with donations and grants.
