VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Earlier this week The City of Watertown and The Watertown Convention & Visitors Bureau and The North Star Athletic Association announced a partnership for the upcoming basketball season. The South Dakota city will host the men’s and women’s basketball championships at The Watertown Civic Arena.
Since it’s inaugural season The NSAA’s playoff format has favored the higher seeds awarding them with home court through the postseason. Last year the highest remaining seed after the opening round held both the semifinals and championship.
Bellevue ended up hosting for the men and Jamestown for the women, with mixed turn out last year commissioner Cory Anderson felt it made the case to reevaluate their format
Basketball has cemented its place in South Dakota as the state’s primary sport and over the last half decade Sioux Falls has capitalized on the trend using their new facilities to host a a long list of tournaments at the youth, high school and college levels.
Anderson said Watertown was looking to follow Sioux Fall’s model but was missing one element
The games will be held at the Watertown Civic Arena on February 23rd and 24th of 2019. The Watertown Civic Arena seats up to 4,500 people, has four locker rooms, athletic training amenities, and is located in the center of Watertown.
