Jamestown, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–Enderlin-Maple Valley (EMV) gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost a heartbreaker to Rugby in the seventh place game of the North Dakota high school state tournament at Jack Brown Stadium. EMV got off to a great start in the first inning, scoring 1 run on 3 hits, but left runners stranded at first and third base to end the inning. The stranded runners proved costly at the end of the day as the Falcons only had 1 more hit, a leadoff double from Jade Pulkrabek in the second inning, but was thrown out at third base on a fielders choice. The Falcons also threatened to score in the fifth inning when Rugby starting pitcher Shayden Luna hit 2 batters and walked another to load the bases with 2 outs. the Panthers escaped when cleanup batter Colten Sorenson hit into an inning ending fielders choice. EMV starting pitcher Dakota Mark allowed just 1 run and 1 hit in 6 innings of work. Mark was relieved by Brandon Utke after allowing his fifth walk of the game to leadoff batter Nate Hamen to start the seventh inning. Hamen stole second base and scored on Devin Michael’s RBI single. Michael moved to second base on the throw to the plate and went to third on a wild pitch. Utke proceeded to strikeout the Panther’s leadoff batter Landon Foster for the second out. Seth Jaeger reached on an error and Michael scored from third to end the game 2-1. The Panthers collected just 2 hits in the game. Luna was the winning pitcher for the Panthers allowing just 1 earned run, 4 hits, walked 2 batters, hit 2 batters, and had 1 strikeout. Utke took the loss for the Falcons, allowing 1 unearned run, 1 hit, and had 2 strikeouts in his 2/3 of an inning. The Falcons finished the year 16-8 overall and Rugby finished 15-4.
