OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- In a season that was wild in so many way, from the shortened length, to the myriad of placing scenarios on the final day, the Oakes High baseball team won their first ever Class B Region I regular season championship via a one run difference in their doubleheader against Kindred-Richland Monday night at Cummings Field.

Game One: Kindred-Richland 4 Oakes 1

Trenton Duchscherer propelled the Vikings to the victory in the first game, with a triple, double and two runs scored. Sawyer Rolland was just as impressive on the mound, going four innings of one hit ball with five strikeouts.

Oakes’ lone run came on a solo home run from Adam Newstel in the sixth inning.

Game Two: Oakes 8 Kindred-Richland 4

The Tornado bats came alive in the second game, with six runs in the first two innings to chase Nick Eggmann out of the game after an inning and a third. Eggmann gave up five runs after not allowing an earned run in his first 12 and two thirds innings this season.

Taylor Schall scored three times in the win, and registered a double and single. Sam Huffman connected for a triple, and Brady McKenna was the winning pitcher, going four innings, surrendering just two runs on four hits.

Both teams finish the regular season at 9-2, but due to Oakes scoring one more run in the two game series, the Tornadoes will be the #1 seed in Friday’s Region I Tournament, and the Vikings will be the #2 seed; each club has secured a first round bye. Times and opponents are to be determined, but all Oakes games can be heard on The Tornado KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com.
