Darold D. Schmuhl, 71, Jamestown, ND, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.
Darold was born on December 13, 1946 in Jamestown, ND, the son of Harold and Helen (Oberlander) Schmuhl. He grew up on their family farm, attended the country school, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1964. He attended college at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, Illinois where he graduated with a degree in computer design in 1968. That same year, Darold enlisted in the Marines and married his first wife, Dianna (Gainsforth) Schmuhl. He served in Vietnam and was discharged in 1972 as a SSGT. Upon returning from service, he worked at Xerox, CSI, and Midwest Business in Jamestown, ND. Darold and Dianna welcomed their son, Todd Schmuhl, in 1977. Dianna passed away in 1998.
Darold met Susan (Dick) Schmuhl at the Stutsman County Fair through the many llama events that both were involved in. He started flirting with her at a friend’s wedding in 2000 and asked her out shortly after. In 2003, Darold and Sue were married at Trinity Lutheran Church. He started working for the Jamestown Public School System in 2009 and worked there until his passing. Darold enjoyed working on his hobby farm with llamas, telling jokes, bowling, serving in Boy Scouts, loved helping his brother farm and playing with his five grandchildren. Darold was active in the Optimist Club, 4-H Club, Relay for Life, and Boy Scouts for 20 years, where he was a Scout Master and awarded the Silver Beaver award, a scouting distinguished service award.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Susan; his son, Todd, Jamestown, ND; his daughters Lacy (Derek) Halvorson, Elko, MN, Alyssa Montgomery, Grand Forks, ND, and Samantha Dick, Shoreview, MN; his grandchildren, Spencer Schmuhl, Hakan, Adeline, Ames, and Oren Halvorson; his mother, Helen Burleson (Schmuhl), Jamestown, ND; his mother-in-law, Mae Peppel, West Fargo, ND; his brother, Dean (Jean) Schmuhl, Jamestown, ND; his sister-in-law, Jan Schwartz, West Fargo, ND; and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Darold is preceded in death by his father, Harold Schmuhl, his first wife, Dianna Schmuhl, his father-in-law, Donald Peppel, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Pastor Susan Haukaas and Pastor Kristi Weber officiating.
Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 14, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown.
Internment: 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
