MADISON, S.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State University women’s track and field team took home four individual conference titles and placed third as a team Friday at the North Star Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Viking women had 11 All-Conference performances and racked up 120 team points at the two-day meet hosted by Dakota State University. The meet wrapped up Friday in Madison, S.D., with rain and cold weather throughout the day.
Dickinson State won the team title with 215 points and University of Jamestown was second with 169.5 points. The Vikings finished ahead of Dakota State (65), Viterbo University (59.5) and Waldorf University (51). VCSU’s 120 points was the most team points scored by the Vikings at the conference meet since the track and field program was reinstated in 2010.
Megan Johnson doubled up on titles, following her Thursday triple jump championship with a title in the long jump on Friday. Johnson jumped 5.36 meters to win the long jump, an event she will compete in at the NAIA National Championships in two weeks. For her effort at the NSAA championships, Johnson was named one of the NSAA Field Athletes of the Meet, sharing the honor with Jamestown’s Kaiann Arellano and Beth Alexander.
Allyssa Weitkum topped a field of 13 runners in the 800 meters, crossing the line for first place in a time of 2:22.23 – more than three second faster than second place. In women’s shot put, Bryeann Robertson launched a throw of 12.67 meters to win first place, narrowly edging teammate Mackenzie Huber who took second place at 12.55 meters.
The Top 3 finishers in each individual event and the top two relay teams earned All Conference at the meet. The Top 6 finishers in each event scored team points.
Grace Miller had a pair of second-place finishes for VCSU in the 5000 and 10,000 meter runs. Huber also doubled up on All Conference honors, placing second in the shot put and third in the discus. Third-place finishes and All Conference honors also went to Keauna Hansen (400 meters), Kristina Fricke (3000 meter steeplechase), and Sayge McKrill (hammer throw).
VCSU had strong team showings in a pair of throwing events. The Vikings placed first, second and sixth in the shot put (Robertson, Huber and Kari Fritel.) In discus, the Viking women had four in the Top 6, placing third, fourth and tying for fifth (Huber, McKrill, Marilyn Quintero, Megan Molash).
“I cannot express how proud I am of the athletes and the manner in which they responded to the less than optimistic weather conditions this week,” said VCSU head coach Chris Johnson. “Both the men’s and women’s teams competed with a lot of heart, and I believe the excellent results demonstrate the dedication and positive mindset that they approached the meet with. Now it’s on to nationals in Gulf Shores.”
Up next: Four Viking athletes are set to compete at the NAIA National Championships, May 24-26 in Gulf Shores, Ala. The list includes Megan Johnson, Grace Miller, Mackenzie Huber and Sayge McKrill.
