MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State’s men took third place at the NSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, totaling 11 All Conference performances and one individual champion during the two-day meet in Madison, S.D.

The conference championships wrapped up Friday in Madison with rain and cold weather affecting all athletes. At the end of the meet, Valley City State’s men came home with 121 team points to place third overall.

Dickinson State won the men’s title with 203 points, followed by Dakota State University (162). Valley City State finished ahead of Jamestown (81), Viterbo University (53) and Waldorf University (32). VCSU’s 121 points was the most team points scored by the Vikings at the conference meet since the track and field program was reinstated in 2010.

The Top 3 finishers in each individual event and the top two relay teams earned All Conference at the meet. The Top 6 finishers in each event scored team points.

Freshman Kyle Odegard took home VCSU’s meet title, winning the javelin on Thursday.

VCSU had a pair of athletes double up on All Conference finishes. Garret Roemmich took second place in the discus and third in the javelin for All Conference honors in both. He also finished fourth in the hammer throw.

Freshman sprinter Jacob Furlott also had two All Conference honors, placing third in both the 100 and 200 meter dash races.

Three other Vikings took second place in their respective events: Dylan Olson (3000 meter steeplechase), Alex Otto (high jump), and Roy Allen (hammer throw). Other third-place finishes were earned by Orin Rambow (800 meters), Zachary Co(hammer throw) and Ben Novak (triple jump).

“I cannot express how proud I am of the athletes and the manner in which they responded to the less than optimistic weather conditions this week,” said VCSU head coach Chris Johnson. “Both the men’s and women’s teams competed with a lot of heart, and I believe the excellent results demonstrate the dedication and positive mindset that they approached the meet with. Now it’s on to nationals in Gulf Shores.”

Up next: Kyle Odegard and Garret Roemmich will both compete in javelin at the NAIA National Championships, May 24-26 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
