JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Local mail carriers in Jamestown are asking residents to donate some non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes this Saturday.

The “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive began 25 years ago when the National Association of Letter Carriers decided to give back to the community. JoAnn Ray is the Jamestown Mail Carrier and Food Drive Coordinator.

Ray says Jamestown has been very supportive of the program, having donated quite a bit of food for the past two years.

All collected food is then donated to the Jamestown Salvation Army. Nationwide last year, the NALC collected more than 75 million pounds of food, which was then donated to local food banks and organizations.

“It’s an honor to be able to help people in need by leading an effort that brings out the best in so many Americans,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said.

Ray says all individuals will need to do is leave items like cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and others next to their mailbox and it will be picked up Saturday.

Residents who will not be available to leave the non-perishables can bring a donation to the Jamestown Salvation Army.
