Dorothy Kvien, age 89, of Valley City, ND, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 29th. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 5th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service on Saturday morning at the church. Interment will be Woodbine Cemetery.
Dorothy Lorraine Hoyer, the daughter of Rev. John and Helen (Wilhelm) Hoyer, was born October 25, 1928 in Richardton, ND. She graduated from Gackle High School in 1946. While a student there she was active in sports, band, choir and theater. She married her high school sweetheart, Maurice “Mickey” S. Kvien, on August 3, 1947. They were blessed with six children, Ginny, Roger, Sharon, Mickey Jr., Scott and Beth. Dorothy Graduated from Valley City State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Minor in History. Dorothy taught school for 20 years; she loved teaching young minds. She also worked in the insurance industry for a number of years. After the death of her husband in 1978, Dorothy became a Realtor Broker. In 1982, she moved to Illinois where she was the Business Manager/Comptroller for Avenues of Independence. After her retirement, she moved back to Valley City. Dorothy was a strong, kind, devoted, loving, supportive, and passionate daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She was active in the Boys Scouts, the U.S Navy Auxiliary and the Railroad with her husband. She attended every sporting event that both her children and grandchildren were a part of, from auto racing to power tumbling. In later years, no matter what the activity was, if family was involved she was there. She was also very active and served on many boards for her church and various other professional, political and service organizations. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her life. Dorothy loved to spend time with her family. She also loved to travel, go camping and boating. She was an avid reader and loved to knit and crochet. She was always up to playing a board game, a card game or basketball game. Her door was always open and the coffee pot was always on. Her loving smile, kind heart, big hugs and gentle manner will be missed by all who knew her.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Ginny (Larry) Monson, Huber Heights, OH, Mickey Jr. (Peggy) Valley City, ND, Beth (Paul) Glandt, Westminster, CO; grandchildren, Aaron Monson, Josh (Michelle) Monson, Adam Monson, Matt (Jodi) Kvien, Leah (Paul) Zimmer, Tara (Ismael) Cashatt-Arencibia, Jerry (Shonte) Cashatt, Patrick (Michelle) Cashatt, Tasha Cashatt, Sean Cashatt, Diontae Cashatt; Pete (Amy) Kvien, Mark Kvien, Ashleigh (Tim) Duran, Sarah Mounger, Brooke Glandt, Maurisa Mounger and Brandon Glandt; great-grandchildren, Jacob Monson, Zachary Bankston, Shane Bankston, John, Lane and Sage Kvien, Noah and Nico Zimmer, Ariel, Savannah, Danielle, Jeri, Justin, Jaylynn, Kay, Matthew and Jonathan Cashatt, Anika and Emily Kvien, Jaiden, Jara and Jaustin Opatz and Emma Mounger; one great-great-grandchild, Nolan Cashatt.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Roger and Scott Kvien; one daughter, Sharon Cashatt; siblings, LeRoy Hoyer, Ruth Baukol, Jack Hoyer, Naomi Wolff and Salome Wiloth; one grandson, Stephen Cashatt; one granddaughter, Jodi Kvien-Opatz, two great-granddaughters, Jena Kvien and Karlee Kvien; two great-grandsons, Dominic Cashatt and Douglas Cashatt; one great-great granddaughter, Isabella Cashatt.
