WEST FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- On a windy North Dakota spring day, Valley City went to West Fargo for their third EDC match in four days. They picked up a 7-2 win over the packers to improve to 3-1. Monday they play Fargo Davies at home.

Coach’s Comments
The day started very windy. Our players spent the warm-up trying to figure out the wind. Once the match started, the wind wasn’t so much the issue as was our mental game. We were in our own heads in several sets throughout the day. The mental side of tennis is huge – so I’m glad we struggled this early in the season with it to try to figure it out by the end of the season.
Cali and Reagan were Cali and Reagan in doubles. They hit solid volleys, solid groundstrokes, solid serves and returns, and had solid put aways. Two solid kids. It is fun watching them play. Reagan in singles ripped backhands that cut through the wind and put away points fast – so fast that I didn’t even get out to coach her. In Cali’s singles, she went against a backboard in Grace. Grace was fabulous at anticipating Cali’s shots and lobbing when Cali went to the net. Cali maintained her focus and figured out a way to beat her in three sets.
Angela and Hannah D at #2 doubles and Hannah A and Kayla at #3 doubles both took a set to really figure out the wind and to just get out there and play tennis. Then, they stepped into balls and put away shots at the net to finish the match out. Kayla had a break out day as her attitude and footwork were the best in those second and third sets as I have seen!
In singles, Hannah Dockter and Hope Petersen keep finding ways to win points. They both have the topspin stroke and then compliments it with short balls, lobs, and a push angled shot that keeps her opponent off balance. Both just find ways to win points. Hope moved the ball around very well and took coaching from Coach Schaack and put it into place on the very next point. She is a gamer!
Angela split sets in her match to force a third set while Hannah was the last match on again. Both of these girls have good tennis skills. To use coach Schaack’s words, we need to get our athletes to use variety in their games. We will be working on a little slice along with using a short ball in singles to mix up the pace and make our opponents uncomfortable. Once a little variety is added, these two will be able to find what works against each opponent and execute.
The biggest victory of the day was with the West Fargo team and fans. A mother from West Fargo talked to me about how great our kids are by their sportsmanship and friendliness to their opponents, coaches, and fans. She said that it is great to play Valley City because of our culture. Talking with West Fargo’s #1 and #2 players, they echoed that mom’s sentiment. Great job Hi-Liners – continue to reach our pillars inside and outside of the tennis court!
Of course, we always have things to work on and not enough time! We have practice tomorrow, prom on Saturday, a light hit around on Sunday, match Monday along with senior awards, match Tuesday and then many of our athletes are going on the New York trip Thursday night until Monday night before our matches on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. We will make it work.
As our varsity match took a very long time, the JV got in a ton of matches. After the West Fargo JV was done, our girls stayed at the JV courts and then played 10 singles matches against each other as well! The more matches you play, the better you will get at reacting to the ball and your opponent. You will also start figuring out how to win points with more matches played. Great work ladies. It was an awesome day for our entire team!
