Coach’s Comments

With the craziness that is spring tennis in North Dakota, Fargo South put out a line-up that was minus some of their best players because of other school activities. Claire was only able to play some doubles and Grace was gone for the whole day.  Every team needs to deal with absences and we are no different.  We were missing one against Red River last week and we will be missing several on Monday.  We took advantage of those absences of Fargo South today.

Reagan and Cali both played some very consistent, winning singles.  Reagan played with what her opponent gave her and took care of business in short order.  Cali started to put the ball deeper about half way through the first set and then never looked back as she cruised to a victory.  In doubles, Fargo South was able to be more aggressive at the net than us.  Together, wee need to work on taking over the net and putting the volley away.

Hannah and Hannah played doubles again today.  We had excellent attitudes and teamwork.  To improve, moving to the ball and setting the feet will help with consistency and depth.  Also, being aggressive at the net will help them put away points early.  In singles, Hannah Dockter found a winning strategy and stuck to it.  She brought her opponent into the net with a short ball and then passed her.  Hannah Aberle found a way to pull out a tight first set going 9-7 in the tiebreaker.  Hannah will need to improve her topspin stroke to help with her consistency in singles.

Angela and Kayla played together for the first time in varsity.  They played consistent and put balls away at the net.  Angela is aggressive in doubles at the net and working on consistency from the baseline with her topspin.  Kayla is starting to blossom.  Continue being positive and learning on the court!  Hope continued to move the ball around leading to her opponent making errors.  Tennis is a game of errors and Hope is minimizing hers while attempting to maximize her opponents.  Keep thinking on the court by setting up each point to win.

For JV, this was most of their first matches of the year.  Also, 9 of our players played in their first match of their career today!  Jerrica stood out today.  She was a beast at the net.  She went for the ball every time and put it away.  Her aggressiveness and ‘go get the ball’ attitude is what we as coaches are looking for!  Great job.

As a team off the court, I could not be prouder.  They all are very polite.  They cheer their teammates on.  They are doing what they are supposed to do even when the coaches aren’t looking. They follow all directions.  It makes coaching easier and more effective as we can focus on tennis because you are doing all the right non-tennis things.  Thank you so much!
