OAKES (NewsDakota.com) Going into the 2018-19 campaign, the Oakes High School varsity girls and boys basketball teams will have new leadership.
Activities Director Shari Christenson said Wednesday that girls coach Don Warren and boys coach Brian Dethlefsen will not be returning next season.
Neither Warren nor Dethlefsen is a full-time faculty member for the school district, and thus, their tenures were “at-will employment”, and subject to end if a qualified staff member was interested in the role. Brennan Hack, currently a high school social studies teacher, announced his interest in the position, and will replace Warren.
Dethlefsen resigned shortly after this past season ended. The boys varsity head coach position is open within the school, and Christenson says the vacancy most likely will remain until open teaching positions within the district are filled.
Warren coached the Tornado girls for three years, finishing with a 28-39 record; which feature back-to-back appearances in the Region III tournament. In two seasons with the boys, Dethlefsen was 15-28, but his teams went 0-4 in post-season play.
“I enjoyed coaching those kids for two years and I will miss it.” said Dethlefsen. “It was both rewarding and challenging. Ultimately, it was just too much time away from my business.”
Warren declined comment for this story.
