FOREST CITY, IOWA (VCSUVikings.com) – It was a tale of two games Thursday for the Valley City State baseball team as the Vikings opened conference play with a triangular in Forest City, Iowa.
The Vikings lost their first game of the day, suffering an 11-1 loss to Presentation College. VCSU bounced back though in game two with an 8-3 win over Waldorf University. In the other game of the day, Presentation College beat Waldorf by a score of 7-6. All games were seven-inning contests.
VCSU is now 7-13 overall and 1-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.
Up next: Valley City State plays Presentation College and Waldorf University again on Friday in Forest City, Iowa. The Vikings face Presentation at 10 a.m. and Waldorf at 12 p.m.
Presentation College 11, VCSU 1
The Saints pounded out 14 hits, three home runs and 11 runs in the first game Saturday as Presentation College won 11-1.
The Saints started the scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and never trailed. VCSU collected eight hits in the game, but was only able to push across one run. Saints starting pitcher James Lewis pitched a complete game, striking out nine and walking only one.
Shaun Kourajian started on the mound for VCSU and took the loss after allowing six hits and seven runs in three innings. Ryan Ellena and Chase Carpenter each pitched in relief.
The Vikings pushed across their only run in the fourth inning on an RBI triple from Brennen Neva. Brady Smith, Neva, and Tyler Ukestad all had two hits in the game for VCSU. Grant Wehseler and Emmanuel Leyva added one hit each.
VCSU 8, Waldorf University 3
Nicholas Vargas and Max Koprek combined to allow just two earned runs and struck out 10 as they pitched the Vikings past the Warriors in game two.
Trailing 1-0, VCSU’s offense erupted with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to build an insurmountable 6-1 lead.
Vargas went 4 1/3 innings on the mound to pick up the win, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs. He walked only one and struck out seven.
Koprek came on in relief with two runners on base in the fifth inning, working out of the jam unscathed. He finished the game for the save, allowing one hit and one unearned run while striking out three.
Aiden Brook went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for VCSU. Brady Smith finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jorun Hamre had two hits and scored a run, and Brennen Neva drove in two runs.
