GRAND FORKS, N.D. (NDAPSSA)- By his coach’s estimate, Wyatt Hanson had approximately 30 dunks in basketball games this winter.

But there was more to the Stanley High School senior’s game than highlight-reel plays. After winning Class B Senior Player of the Year and North Dakota Mr. Basketball awards, Hanson leads the annual Class B boys basketball all-state team, as selected by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Joining Hanson on the all-state first team are seniors Kyler McGillis of St. John, Andrew Christianson of Fargo Oak Grove, Garrett Bickett of Carrington and Lane Hanson of Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier and sophomore Carson Henningsgard of state champion Hillsboro-Central Valley.

“Wyatt kept (his dunks) pretty basic,” Stanley coach Kory Anderson said. “He didn’t want to showboat. But he has explosive jumping ability. That probably overshadowed his all-around game sometimes.”

The 6-foot-5 Hanson averaged 21.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists for Stanley. He was 26-of-110 on 3-point attempts. Hanson finished his career with 2,249 points.

“He’s such a dynamic player,” Anderson said. “He plays above the rim, something you don’t always see in Class B. He’s a smooth, athletic kid. He could score from inside or outside and he was a good passer. He was a tough matchup for teams.”

Christianson, a 6-3 guard and a Mr. Basketball finalist, as a senior set Oak Grove records for points in a season (588) and finished with a school-record 1,507 career points. He averaged 25.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals this season.

“Andrew is a good perimeter shooter. He hits shots from 25 feet,” Grovers coach Kyle Card said. “And he really improved this season in his ability to get to the basket. His ballhandling was better. He really turned himself into a good all-around player.”

Bickett, a 5-10 guard, averaged 19 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2 assists, making 71 three-point baskets. He finished with 1,436 career points.

“Garrett was our primary ballhandler and playmaker,” Cardinals coach Tim Ranum said. “He was good at creating shots and he’s a good shooter. Defenses would try to take away his scoring and he’d find open teammates. He can do it all.”

The 6-5 Lane Hanson is headed to Northern State in Aberdeen to play football. He averaged 25.3 points and 13.3 rebounds this season, finishing his career with 1,393 points.

“Lane could make the 3-point shot (connecting on 27 this season),” E-K-M coach Kevin Strobel said. “But the majority of his points came from the inside. He was a power player, just so strong around the basket. There were many times when he scored with teams double- and triple-teaming him down low.”

McGillis scored the 2,000th point of his career in the state tournament third-place game, capping a season in which the 6-1 guard averaged 28.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.9 steals. He had 2,022 career points and was a Mr. Basketball finalist.

“Kyler is one of the best all-around scorers you’ll find,” Woodchucks coach Steve Poitra said. “He can attack the rim. He shoots the three pretty well. And he has one of the best mid-range games I’ve seen.”

The 6-2 Henningsgard, a first-year starter, led the 26-1 Burros in scoring (19.9 ppg), assists (7.9 apg), steals (3.2 spg) and 3-point baskets (52).

“Carson took over the leadership role,” H-CV coach Elliot Rotvold said. “He was the floor leader. When we needed something, he took charge. He plays beyond his years and is an extension of the coaches on the floor.”
