JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The James River Figure Skating Club has continued to dominate on the ice this season.
For more than 40 years, the club has participated in area competitions and put on their annual ice show. Parent volunteer Judy Jorgenson says the club has multiple competitors in nearly all of the levels of competition.
Jorgenson points out that competitors need to test beforehand in three different categories including moves in the field, free skate, and dance. There are different levels in those categories, with freeskate determining the competitive level of the skater.
According to Jorgenson, parent volunteers make the club and its operations possible.. With no ties to the school district or any other organization, they club relies on volunteers and fundraisers to operate.
With that said, Jorgenson says it is sometimes overlooked just how successful the figure skating club has been. In just five competitions in the 2017-18 competitive season, the club has won 135 total medals.
Even more impressive, they’ve done this with just 15 skaters in competitions against skaters who have attended academies for their entire skating career.
Coach Mark Vasarhelyi has continued to educate the skaters with his years of experience. The skaters, both competitors and club members, will be presenting their skills during the 41st annual ice show March 16th, 17th, and 18t at Wilson arena. This years theme will be Magnificent Musicals. Tickets are available from local skaters, Gifts from the Heart, and Neighborhood Grocery and Gas. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Price will be $2 more at the door.
