JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For more than a year, the city of Jamestown along with a supporting cast have been working towards implementing curbside recycling for their residents.

Now on April 2nd, the fruits of their labor will be realized.

The process has not been without many hiccups and delays. Starting March 7th, Jamestown residents began receiving their bins from city crews. They expect bins to be delivered through the rest of this week. Ralph Friebel with the Recycle Center of North Dakota says now their duty before the April 2nd start is educating everyone on the different things that come with the service. He says the city will go to automated garbage pickup on that same day.

Friebel reports that they will pickup half of Monday’s route one week, and the second half the following week. He says the information that everyone can use will be found inside their delivered carts.

With this new service, Friebel says it will be up to residents to educate themselves on what can and can’t be recycled.

The glass will not be accepted in the pickup due to the hazards it can create if it were to break. Friebel points out it would “contaminate” the other recyclables inside the bin and make it dangerous for the workers sorting the items. However, the glass will be accepted through drop off at their center in Jamestown. He says county residents can also feel free to bring their recyclables to the drop off site if they wish to participate in recycling.

Friebel also gave credit to the City Beautification Committee and University of Jamestown for their role in getting the information out to the public.

He says the University of Jamestown Marketing Course taught by Dr. Mort Sarabakhsh has also been very beneficial in educating the public.

For those experiencing issues with their bins, Fribel says the delivery during the colder weather has sort of caused “deformations” to the bins. He says all residents need to do is bring the bin inside and warm it up so it takes it’s correct shape or wait for warmer weather. The city of Jamestown also addressed the bin issues during their city council meeting earlier this month.
