VALLEY CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) – It was a harrowing day for members of the Valley City State University Women’s basketball team as they ventured to the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa on Monday.

At around 2 in the afternoon, the team’s bus was on Interstate 29, going south, between Watertown and Brookings South Dakota, when it skidded off the road and ended up in a creek, causing damage to the windshield of the bus; but without any injuries to the 21 people aboard.

The team waited a couple hours until crews could rescue them, and transfer them to a new bus. Upon arrival in Brookings, the interstate was closed, keeping the team in town for the evening.

Tuesday saw the team travel east thru Minnesota and then south to make it to Sioux City in the afternoon due to the closer of the interstate.

KOVC radio Sports Director, and Voice of Valley City State, Joel Morgan says the experience was quite a shock, and everyone coming through the incident unscathed was quite a blessing.

The Vikings play St. Francis in the opening round of the tournament Thursday. Coverage on KOVC-AM 1490/96.3 FM and NewsDakota.com starts around 1:30 p.m.
